Citizens, MEPs, NGOs and celebrities – including Pamela Anderson! – launched the 'End the Cage Age' European Citizens' Initiative across Europe.
In Europe, more than 300 hundred million animals spend their entire lives in cages - confined, restricted and thwarted from carrying out their natural behaviours. Cages are cruel and completely unnecessary. The “End the Cage Age” European Citizens' Initiative calls on the European Commission to propose a ban on cages for animals such as hens, pullets, sows, calves, ducks, geese, quail and rabbits.
In Brussels, we launched the Initiative on 25 September 2018 with a conference and a week-long exhibition hosted by MEP Eleonora Evi. Twenty-one MEPs from most political groups (EPP, S&D, EFDD, Greens/EFA, GUE/NGL and ECR) and from 13 European countries spoke at the launch. MEPs and participants also sang a song with lyrics calling for an end to cages (lyrics by MEP Stefan Eck), see video below.
